What are the biggest mistakes you can make after a car accident?

Being involved in a car accident can be devastating for Colorado residents. Too many people end up making some of the biggest mistakes after a crash.

Not getting medical attention

Immediately after a car accident, it’s normal for adrenaline to be racing. You might feel like you’re fine and refuse medical attention. However, even minor collisions can leave you injured and not feeling the effects until days or even weeks later.

Not calling 911

Car accidents resulting in property damage or an injury require police being called to the scene. They can create an accident report and determine if a driver broke the law. If you don’t call 911, the driver won’t be held accountable. You will also not be able to get a copy of the police accident report.

Admitting fault

For many people, it comes naturally to apologize after a car accident. However, doing that can be misconstrued as an admission of guilt. You shouldn’t make conversation with the other parties after an accident at all. Keep it at a minimum when exchanging information with the other driver or drivers.

Waiting too long to file your claim

If you suffered injuries in a car accident and plan on filing a claim with the at-fault driver’s insurance company or against them personally, don’t wait too long. Procrastinating can lead to the statute of limitations running out. However, even if you take several months to file, it can be seen as a false claim, especially if you file with an insurance company. This could result in your claim being refused.

Accepting the first settlement offer

Never accept the first settlement offer you get. If your claim is against an insurance company, it’s plausible that the offer is far less than what your case is worth.

Be alert to these mistakes after a car accident. It might help your claim.
